My name is John Gustafson, and I’m originally from the west suburbs of Chicago. I moved out to Boston almost two years ago after my wife took a job out east. I worked in sports television for about four years before deciding to go back to school to change careers to physical education.
When I’m not working and at home, I am most likely watching television or sports. I’m a huge cinephile and love being a student of film and TV. I also try to watch as much sports as possible, but it’s tough living here and not having my beloved Chicago Bulls or Cubs on. I don’t get out to play much, but I love to golf as well.
Working in production for a sports media network was thrilling and I met a lot of great people along the way, but my passion for teaching and coaching is something that was always in the back of my mind. I currently coach for Premier Hoops which is a basketball skills development and AAU team in the greater Boston area. I truly love coaching basketball, and my dream is to coach at the high school level.
Although I love coaching for Premier Hoops, the job requires that I travel far and wide throughout New England. Some games are in Hampton, New Hampshire, while some camps may be in Rockland, Massachusetts. I recently moved to Braintree, so I spend a lot of time in the car driving to these locations. As a result, I resort to eating in the car and drive-thrus which is less than ideal. The health aspect I’ve chosen is simply to eat healthier. This is a simple goal, but it’s something that I can really value and it will benefit me longterm. The obvious upside is the healthier lifestyle I can achieve, but looking beyond that, I want to be able to tell students and basketball players what they should be eating. Reaching my health aspect will make me a better educator and coach.
I’m really looking forward to this course because there’s a lot for me to learn. I’m excited to continue my education and expand on what I already know!
